No, I am not going to critique the TV show " The Walking Dead" - but my family and I do watch zombie movies.
I had an opportunity to walk through a hospital a few days ago and the experience made me think. In my practice there seems to be two sets of patients. The first set gets good results but does the absolute bare minimum for health and find themselves with health problems repeatedly through out their lives.
The second set are patients that get better than average results and do many things on a consistent basis to not only protect their health but TRY AND ENHANCE their health and as follows...their well-being.
Also, I have met people the same age, yet dramatically different health status.
For example, Pete has been kind enough to show me some Olympic Weight Lifting techniques... so do you think Pete is in his 20' or 30's or 40's? Pete is 59 and one strong healthy man. Pete does not look his age - AT ALL. Yet, met another man Pete's age who has COPD, trouble walking and is overweight - basically WALKING DEATH.
I'm going to get a little deep - so bare with me, and NO I do not use illegal drugs (wine, tequila and the occasional Cape May Beer (Honey Porter).
Life Heals - the difference between a cut on a corpse, which as you know won't heal to a cut on your finger - which WILL heal, the difference is LIFE.
Health writer, Keith Wassung has a good analogy for this: " Billy Joel the famous piano player and singer goes to perform in concert - he plays his signature song... Piano Man perfectly, because he's played this song thousands of times. Yet the stage hands did not TUNE his piano. So, did Billy's song sound good out of tune? No of course not, even though Billy Played it perfectly. He couldn't play it another way BECAUSE the piano was not working at optimum.
Health Care providers call this Homeostasis, Structural Chiropractors call it Innate or inborn intelligence. Tomato or Too-Ma-to - same thing said differently.
Your body wants to heal and run PERFECTLY all the time. But the structure of your body may be "out of tune". The more your structure is at optimum the better your body's innate or homeostasis can adapt to the stresses of life. Does this make sense?
So, in the piano story - what could the stage hands do to make the piano sound optimal or in tune?
Tune it up - Yes ( and that is what we do at the office, Tune or Detect abnormalities in the spine and then Correct them). But what else, could be done to have the piano in optimal condition. It's best to keep the piano in the optimal environment (not to hot or cold - the humidity just right). The pedals working just right not stuck or loose.
How does this translate to your health?
Well, the tune up is getting your spine in my office so we can at least detect any abnormalities . Also strength training exercises, not just biceps curls or ab work - but the back muscles and leg muscles.
Eat more protein and eating less white trash (potato, bread, rice, pasta). Eating more fruits(berries) and veggies and less processed foods (chips, ice cream, soda). Also taking a good supplement - NOT a bag full of pills - we are NOT pill pushers, health does come from with in - just realize as the computer geeks say; "garbage In = garbage out."
The two types of people, guess which type of person I saw at the Hospital and guess which type I saw at the gym? Preparing your body for the worst and doing the right things consistently over time gives you the opportunity for a better life with abundant health - no guarantee's.....
You can sit on your ass, smoke, drink eat chips and icecream and take your chances. Choice is up to you. Now, if you don't know how to plan? If you don't know what to do or how to start - well than give us a call we will get you to the start line AND show you how to finish (either with our help or one of my health partners).
Walking DEAD vs. LIFE is a CHOICE or small, consistent choices over time.
Have a GREAT day
